The number of legal tourist apartments in Tarragona has grown to 1,690. This is the figure recorded on April 28 of this year, a figure that shows the recovery from the effects of the pandemic. In 2018 there was a total of 737, as collected by the Diagnosi de l'habitatge d'ús turístic a Tarragona study, promoted by the Municipal Tourist Board and prepared by the URV Foundation, the Parc Científic y Tecnològic de Turisme and Oci de Catalonia and the GRATET. In 2019 the figure grew to around 1,200, according to the president of the Association of Tourist Apartments of the Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre, Joan Calvet.
In 2020 there was a stagnation due to covid-19, but since 2021 the number has increased again. "Some who perhaps unsubscribed in 2020 have returned," says Calvet, who adds that "every time people are more aware that they have to regularize the operation of the service", since the sanctions for those who operate in illegally can be between 3,000 and 30,000 euros per dwelling.
